Form definition

My Own meaning: A 3-D shape such as a cube sphere or cone holds form due to lighting forming around the object.

Googles definition: The visible shape or configuration.

For example the use of lighting in the image on the left-hand side helps portray the form of the shape as it creates shading around it creating a cylinder effect on this object.

Pattern Work Diary Thursday 24th September 2015

During the lesson today on the 24th September 2015, our task was set to take images on the formal element, pattern whilst going out into town. In this lesson I learned the simple ways which nature shows us patterns, ways that we normally pass of when walking around everyday.

A photo I don't like:
Even though the leaves are repeated across the whole photo, I do not like this image. The reason for this is because it is out of focus and the angle of the plants are off. Also I don't like this image because there is something behind the leaves which I don't know what it is. I think this takes of the focus as its mainly all green yet the object isn't. Additionally, I don't like this image because the leaves are all different sizes and I think the best pattern images, all shapes need to be that same size.

A photo I do like:
I really like the repeated pattern of the bikes in this image. Even though it would be better if the bikes that weren't brightly coloured weren't in it, I still like this photo. I believe the focus is very good into showing this element. Alongside the angle, pattern is shown right across this photo and I really like it. If someone was to look at it, I believe it would catch someones eye. The pattern would still be seen if it was black and white and would even fit in with the bikes in the background.

Progression:
If I were to re-do this photo shoot, I would make sure that everything I took an image of for pattern, would be the same size and in a good order. I would also make pattern the only focus point in the whole photo- so the pattern would cover the entire image. If given this chance, I would take photos of more natural elements to show pattern, yet unlike the one above, cover the whole frame. Images below are ones I have seen online and have got inspiration which I would use if I done this again:

Pattern Straight Images

Nature holds a variety of different patterns, this image is a clear example of that. Each leaf is repeated through shape and size down each part of the plant producing this beautiful out come a this patterned image on the left. The reason I have chosen this as one of my straight images is because the pure greenery and simplicity of this pattern. Even though some parts of the plant are smaller than the other, the pattern still continues throughout without one main focus point.

Secondly, Man made objects, when positioned in the correct order can create a great pattern, as shown in my photo of Toblerones. The reason I chose to take an image of this pattern if because I feel that from the angle, the pattern flows clearly down the image. The similarity between this image and the image above is that there isn't a main focus point, the way a patterned image should be. The only down side to this image is in the bottom left hand corner you can see the selling shelf which isn't part of the pattern which I should have cut out.

Naturally, people see an image such as this one and think
Oh a duck. However if you look at the features on the duck, you can see a repeated pattern that carries on through its entire body. The reason I like this simple pattern is because it so natural that many people just pass it off because its normal, when looking for patterned items much more comes to the eye- such as the patterns on the ducks feathers.

Even though tree stumps are seen more as the textured element, you can see in this image a pattern on it that is followed and copied down and it continues. Not only is there patterns within the tree stump, I purposely include some needles from the bush on either side because they are also repeated pattern and I like the way in which the two different patterns compliment each other as it isn't as if one takes focus off the other.

Finally, I chose this image for patterns because I believe it is a simple pattern through the water fountain creating the rims on the water. A pattern is a repeated design, the way the water is growing the further it gets from the middle. The reason I like this is because it shows the simple way which nature shows us patterns.

I like the simplicity of this image because naturally this image is spiraling stairs, however pattern is clearly shown here through the image of the shot as it shows how further down the stairs are the closer they look like they are getting, this creates an effect to the eye of the viewer as they follow the stairs into the middle. The reason this is inspiring for the element of pattern is because I like the way the repeated design is show so simply. Even though on my shoot for pattern I will not be able to get an image like this in town, I find this inspirational for later images as well .

Another image I chose for inspiration is this image on the right. The reason I like the image is because through man made objects patterns are very clear, the repeated pattern of the bikes is made clear, alongside this the black and white compliments the pattern even more so as colour is no distraction.

This is another example of how man made objects can be used in patterns, yet not purposely. The main reason I like this image is purely down to the use of focus and how only one sign is in focus, as if the photographer is saying
You don't need to clearly see the others as you already know what they are.
I believe this is a good idea to portray pattern as the viewer would be forced to followed the pattern around the image.

Furthermore, I chose this image as one to include because I like had the pattern of the shapes change on each row. In the middle there is a clear circle then a circled row of triangles followed by a row of trapeziums. The reason I like this is because it draws the eye in, personally if I were to recreate this image I would make it so there was an object in the middle rather than a circle because that would mean the pattern would lead the viewers eye to the certain object.

This is a key example of natures simplicity of pattern within an image of a butterfly. If it were possible I would like to take an image of a butterflies wings because I believe the patterns on them are purely beautiful to look at. However as there isn't that many butterflies here my chances might be slim. Another reason i like this is because it's not the colours with show the pattern clearly, if this was black and white, the pattern would still be visible.

I like the two different types of pattern in this image, the repeated shape of lady birds alongside the repeated black spots on their backs. The reason I find this photo inspiring is because I would like to create an image which has more than one type of the element- more than one pattern. This would make my images better in my opinion because at first sight someone would see the more dominant pattern then looking in with more focus they would see the repeated spots.

Pattern Definition

Patterns:
Googles definition: A repeated decorative design.

My own meaning: An order of shapes that follow a repeated design with a consistent relationship.

An example of pattern in photography is this image on the Right. This shows a clear repetitive pattern with in nature on this cactus plant. This is because each leaf is the same size and continues around the plant- in a patterned design.

Texture Work Diary Tuesday 22nd September 2015

During the lesson on the 22nd September, I was given the task to take images that portray the element of texture in town. In this lesson I intended to take a photo in which would clearly portray texture but not in a "obvious" way because I have learned through the last few lessons and whilst looking at various numbers of textured images taken by photographers that these images are a good way of gaining attention on your image. During this task I encountered many images which portrayed texture clearly yet when taking a photo, I found it hard to find the best angle to convey it in the best way.

A photo I don't like:

I don't like this photo because I believe that the texture I intended to display was removed by the lighting- as there wasn't much sunlight and my flash wasn't on. This meant that the drops weren't clearly show when taking the image. Also, I do not like this photo because the focus on the rain isn't clear and I feel this is another reason why texture isn't portrayed well in this image. The angle as well on this photo makes this one I don't like because the lines go diagonally, yet I think for this to have work even a tiny it better- the straight on image would have been better.

A photo I do like:

I really like this image because I believe it captures texture very well. From the bumps on the berries to the spikes on the leaves in the background and even a few rain drops all give this image the element of texture. Another reason why I like this is because I think that even if this was black and white the effect on the audience would still be the same and they would also understand the texture displayed through out this photo. The focus is another reason why I like this image because the objects at the front are the main focus and behind it's blurred. I believe this to be the best way to show this photo because there are no distractions taking away from the main element.

Progression:
The main part I would do differently if given the chance to re-do this element would be to use my flash on my camera better because I believe especially with photos such as the rain on the bench one, for texture to be clear there needs to be more light and better focusing. Additionally, I would make sure that photos that I take regarding texture would have the type of effect on the viewer that they can almost feel the object. Images that I have found online to do this are as followed:
