Tone work diary, Tuesday 6th October 2015.

On Tuesday 6th September 2015, our element for our task was, Tone! Within this lesson the main thing in which I learnt was that to find tone, lighting was your best friend. However this day was rather dreary and grey, which made finding tone rather hard. Although when it came to editing, even the photos which I thought weren't the greatest, showed tone a lot more than what I originally thought.




A photo I don't like...
I don't like this image. If this image was another element, perhaps shape, I would like it, although I believe it doesn't show tone in the way which I had intended. Even though there is some change in tone, it isn't that clear. I also don't like the fact there is green in the background of this as believe I takes away the main image of the objects.

A photo I like...

Even though it looks like I took this image in the studio, I managed to take it in a shop because I liked the way the lighting fell onto her face. This photo was one in which I managed to edit. I really like this photo (both of them) and feel that I clearly shows the main concept of what I learnt in this lesson, lighting is the most important element when finding tone. Even though you can see tone on the left one, I believe the tone is much more dominant on the black and white one. Whilst editing this I changed the contrast and the brightness to help show the tone more. You can clearly see the highlighted tone diagonally down the face, across the nose. This is why I like this photo because more images conveying tone on a face is when the highlighted tone is one side and the shadow tone would be on the other side which transitional tone through the rest of the face. However on this photo, the middle is highlighted and the shadowed tone is behind the hair.

When I was out in town taking photos of tone I found it really challenging to find tone. However when editing I found it much more easier to notice that everything can show a tone, whether it's dominate or just slight and editing makes it much more easier to see tone.

If I were given the chance to re-do this element and to go out and take more images I would defiantly change the way I went about it. I found it rather challenging to find images which suited tone, however I forgot how editing them could help tone come out in an image. What I found was that black an white images show tone, however the images I got didn't all suit this so I would make sure next time I'd look out more for this. Examples of how I would do this shoot are shown below as these are images which I have found and find inspirational.

Tone Straight images

I really like this image in the way of tone. The way the sunlight hits certain parts of the grass leaving a darker shadow on the other side. I also like the bold green colour on this photo with only some strands of grass in focus leaving the others blurrier. The fact that no where in the photo is taking focus away is a reason fro why I like this photo.

This is another photo which I like portraying tone as the main colour of this photo is red yet the puddle patches on the bricks makes the tone differ from the rest. If I were to edit this photo, even as simply as adding a black and white filter onto it, I believe it would show tone even more.


 The leaves in this image convey tone in a colour way instead of lighting. I like this because the colouring really stands out and shows clear divisions of colour. Again
 even if this was change to black and white, the tone would still be shown, although for this image I like this due to the colouring. For me, I find natural photos such as this very beautiful (like the first image in this blog) this is why I have decided to add this photo.

 This wall also shows tone, yet again it was due to colour, as you can tell from most of these images, it was a rather dull day with minimum sunlight- only busts of light (which I was lucky enough to capture in my first photo). For this image, (shown in my work diary) I managed to change this black and white and it showed tone much better than this does. To me, as the angle is slanted, it makes it better because it distorts the shape of the wall.






 Finally, I like this image in portraying tone as I was able to position this person with lighting going down the face. I also like the colouring of this photo because I feel like this could have been taken with in a studio, although it was within a shop. The fact that there's one striking line diagonally across the face transitioning across the whole face makes this image a good one for portraying tone- the reason why I like it.

 I really like this image on showing tone because you can see the shadow on the top of the Eiffel tower, and the highlights are at the bottom of the image. Other than this, the main reason I like this photo is because the angle of the photo makes the Eiffel tower looks really tall and the colouring makes this a really interesting photo.




This photo really shows tone on the shoe even though its not a shiny one, I really like this because I feel like the dullness of the boot makes this image really emotional, even though to many it will just be a picture of a boot. The fact that the viewer would be wanting to look further into the photo, makes this an image that I would like to recreate.

Furthermore, I chose this photo for my image bank because it shows a clear tone not just with one of the balls but with all of them as you can clearly see the highlight and the shadow on every single ball. The reason this is why I like this image is because I like the way in which it clearly teaches us how tone is mainly shown with the use of lighting.

 This is another image that I like to show the element of tone because I like the creepy feel to the image. The tone creates the tone rather than the lighting, however there is a sort of light coming from the distance, as if sunrise. The dark shadowing of the tree creates a dark and depressing feeling which suggests this should be a graveyard.

Finally, I chose this image for my image bank because I like the tone that is shown on the skin of the male and going up the arm of the female. Not just this but I like the confusing emotion on the image because it looks like a marriage photo but due to the black and white with the tone it shows a sort of depression within.

Tone Definition

tone: 

Google: A way of showing greater firmness or strength within an image. With a Range in-between, (this range is called) Gamut. 

My own: The way the light falls on a 3D object. There are highlights and shadows creating this tone. Without tone, Form doesn't exist.

For example, within this image you can see the light is coming towards the left hand side of the face so this side is HIGHLIGHTED the nose area is the TRANSITIONAL area and the other side of the face is CORE SHADOW tone.
